The Incredible 5-Point Scale
The Incredible 5-Point Scale was designed by Kari Dunn Buron and Mitzi Curtis. These scales visually show where the person is finding themselves in the situation or where the different options to the situation are on the scale.
One example of a Incredible 5-Point Scale would be a scale to help with an understanding of the emotions of the person or those of the people around them. It may include options of what to try to help the person feel better if they are feeling uncomfortable. By understanding their emotion or where their emotion is on the scale, they have the ability to tell others what they are feeling by using a number instead of trying to explain an unknown emotion.
Another example shows voice volume, 1=quiet, 3=normal volume and 5=very loud. By sharing a number or pointing to the number on a chart the student visually realizes their voice is too loud, too soft, just right or where they are being asked to adjust it too.
These scales are designed individually to fit the situation and also the needs and abilities of the person. They can range from 1-5 or if this is too complex 1,3,5 may be easier and more comfortable for the person.
